Spark ATM & “Shabbos Shop”

Spark ATM is fast becoming one of our favourite partners. Apart from sponsoring Fun Days and providing a ready source of inspiring volunteers, each Fun Day with Spark ATM results in some amazing new initiative. Spark ATM really go the extra mile to help out our children and beneficiaries. After our Fun Day in June 2011 with Emasithandane in Nyanga, Tanya Sternberg decided to set up “Shabbos Shop”. Here, in her words, is the spark behind the initiative:

“We recently visited a children’s home in Nyanga called Emasithandane. There are 35 children living in the home in absolute poverty-stricken conditions. Most of them are either orphans or from abusive homes. The children were amazingly happy despite living in such tragic conditions. One of the caretakers of the home gave us a wish list – a necessity being food, as they struggle each month to feed all the children.

We are therefore arranging a collection of food monthly. The collection is called “THE SHABBOS SHOP”. We all know how much we buy for Shabbos dinner and if we can arrange for a group of girls to each just buy one extra packet of either sugar/flour/rice per month, it will make a huge difference.”

Sheer brilliance! If you’d like to help Emasi by setting up your own food collection service among friends, you can email Tanya at shabbosshop@gmail.com.
