A moment captured forever!

What beautiful things you can create with exceptionally brave children and colourful popsicle sticks, soft wool, glitter and a polaroid camera.

On Friday nine American students from various Universities joined us at the Tygerberg Children's Hospital. We spent the morning in the Oncology Ward with 20 awe-inspiring children who are bravely fighting cancer.

Anthea Lewis, the driving force behind the TLC organisation Tough Living with Cancer, welcomed us warmly and informed us about the little patients. TLC is a support service which forms part of the Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA).

Anthea, being a cancer survivor, truly understands the emotional and physical pain involved in fighting this battle. We all agree that she has the aura of a peaceful warrior and her care is almost tangible.

Some of the little ones were too weak to participate in the activities, but their moms enjoyed being fully immersed in the crafts. This was a welcoming distraction from the harsh realities which they face daily. Often traveling far distances to be able to spend the day with their child and then arriving home late at night.

Some of the children were without family members, so having a volunteer with them for the morning was really special and encouraging.

Little popsicle superheroes emerged with bobbly eyes and bright paper capes. And stunning photo frames were crafted so that a polaroid pic of a child and their family member/or volunteer could be attached and placed next to their beds. A reminder of the fun time which they shared and the new friends they made. Friendship bracelets made of rainbow-coloured wool were also woven.

Kids were definitely intrigued by the foreign accents and many asked inquisitive questions about America.
